Howe Industries Internship Opportunity Details

Company Description: Howe Industries develops new technologies for space exploration and power generation with a focus on nuclear systems. Previous projects include nuclear thermal rockets, radioisotope power systems, advanced propulsion concepts, and solar energy systems. We have recently incorporated AI tools for creating custom tools for modeling and design, deep research, and system analysis.

Primary Responsibilities/ Focus Areas of Internship: Tasks are expected to cover a variety of topics, including CAD design, novel R&D for new projects, machining/manufacturing, and/or executing experiments. Activities may vary based based on the applicant's capabilities and interests. Most topics will likely be based on nuclear reactors, nuclear rockets, or radioactive materials.

Key Tasks/Projects the intern may be involved with

  • CAD - designing new models or adjusting old models to update concepts based on feedback and proposal needs. Detailed designs are important for conveying concepts, and the applicant will receive experience in producing visuals.
  • Modeling - The applicant may use MCNP or OpenMC for nuclear applications, COMSOL for thermal/stress analysis, or custom codes for other applications. They will be able to develop FEA and computer modeling skills.
  • Experimentation - The Howe Industries prototyping lab includes CNC mills, lasers, welders, water jet cutters, and various other tools for building and testing hardware. Interested applicants will receive hands-on experience making their technologies work.
  • R&D - Howe Industries generates novel concepts for the most advanced technologies. Applicants may be tasked with learning about nuclear engineering, AI, space exploration, or other complex topics.
  • AI - Interns will assist with running, debugging, troubleshooting, and benchmarking existing software, as well as building their own tools to help with their future work. Even though AI provides a strong tool to work with, it must be carefully understood and used correctly. We will assist in making sure the capability is used responsibly and reliably.

Required Skills  & Level:

  • Thermodynamics - Advanced
  • Structural mechanics - Intermediate
  • Orbital mechanics - Intermediate
  • CAD - Intermediate
  • FEA - Intermediate
  • Programming - Beginner
  • Communication - Teamwork, brainstorming, and working together are the most important aspects of working out new technologies and overcoming obstacles.

Work Location & Hours: This position is 100% in person. Hours can vary as long as they are conveyed to management beforehand.
