I am a 5th year PhD student in the College of Optical Science. I have a huge interest in helping young girls see themselves in fields that they are not currently represented in. The best way to do that is through exposure to STEM. This will help them realize STEM is not as scary as it seems. An easy way of introducing them to STEM is through the phone. My project is to design an app where they get to program the whole Mars 2020 mission. Through this app they will be exposed to not only computer science, which is a field that needs more people like them, but the instruments on the rover as well. The app will teach them what the instruments do and the science behind how they work. If time permits, it will also show them what it takes to make the instruments and the rover work.

Madison Walder is a University of Arizona Junior majoring in Astronomy. She works with Andrea Banzatti from the Lunar and Planetary Lab on "High-resolution spectroscopy to study the evolution of exoplanet-forming disks.”

Cathryn Sephus is a University of Arizona Senior majoring in Molecular and Cellular Biology. She works with Betul Kacar from the Molecular and Cellular Biology and Astronomy Departments on “Utilizing contemporary biology to reconstruct ancient biosignatures.”

Dominic Sanchez is a University of Arizona Senior majoring in Optical Science. He works with Jordan Stone from the Astronomy Department on “Finding Planets with Confidence: Empirical Noise Distributions for the LMIRCam Adaptive Optics Image.”

Victor Padilla is a University of Arizona Senior majoring in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering. He works with Stuart Craig from the Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering Department on “Wind Tunnel Experiments on High-speed Boundary-layer Transition.”

Ruby O'Brien is a University of Arizona Junior majoring in Mechanical Engineering. She works with Eric Betterton from the Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences Department on “Arsenic and Lead in Airborne Dust Associated with Mining Operations.”

Alec Nienhauser is a University of Arizona Senior majoring in Chemical Engineering. He works with Eduardo Saez from the Chemical and Environmental Engineering Department on “Removal of Trace Organics for Water Reuse.”
