Phil Guertin's recent research has focused on the use of geographic information systems for natural resource and watershed management in the southwestern United States. He currently has GIS-based research projects with the U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park Service, U.S. Geological Survey, and Agricultural Research Service.
