Project Masel

Project Description: The genetic code, describing how 64 nucleotide triplets get translated into 20 amino acids, was a critical step toward complex life. Our lab has hypothesized a series of steps through which it might have evolved via simpler genetic codes with fewer amino acids. This project will use ESMFold to simulate how proteins might have evolved folds under different hypothesized early genetic codes.

NASA Relevance: Astrobiology is a priority area within science, with decadal plans specifically referring to the evolution of the genetic code as a question of interest.

Work Description: The intern will write computer programs and run them on high performance computing, analyze and interpret the outputs, and troubleshoot as needed until we get interesting results.
