Information

Guest Speaker Malcolm Hughes (Friday, April 20)

Malcolm Hughes, Regents' Professor of Dendrochronology, will present Strange times on Planet Earth during the Friday night Space Grant Symposium Banquet.

Not surprisingly, the human footprint on the third planet has grown dramatically in the last couple of hundred years. Our population has grown massively,  and our use of oil, coal and gas has fueled technologies that greatly magnify our impact. We'll discuss the science of measuring these impacts, from its origins in the laboratory to the role of observation from space.

Malcolm K. Hughes has a B.Sc. in Botany and Zoology (1965) and a Ph.D. (1970) from the University of Durham (United Kingdom) and held postdoctoral fellowships at the universities of Aarhus (Denmark) and Durham. He taught at Liverpool Polytechnic (United Kingdom) from 1971 until 1986 when he became Director of the Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research at the University of Arizona, a position he held until 1999. His early work was on ecosystem energetics and trace elements in ecosystems, but for the past four decades he has focused on past climate variability. He is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union (1998) and Regents’ Professor (2007) at the University of Arizona. He has recently retired from the position of Chair of the Geology and Geography section of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He held visiting fellowships at the University of Colorado, Harvard and the National Center for Atmospheric Research. He is author of more than 145 scientific publications.
