Keynote Speaker Dr. Kenneth L. Tanaka to speak on "What Does It Take to Map the Geology of Mars?"

The new geologic map of Mars funded by NASA and published online and in print by the U.S. Geological Survey, records the materials, terrains, and geologic features of the planet at 1:20,000,000 scale as interpreted by planetary scientists. The map incorporates data acquired by orbital spacecraft since the late 1990s. As such, it serves as a basis for further research and exploration of Mars. The map came about through a series of steps: (1) Proposing for a NASA research grant, (2) collating diverse spacecraft data sets, (3) selecting and coordinating a research team, (4) developing systematic mapping approaches and analysis techniques, (5) interacting with additional colleagues and working under the oversight of scientific and technical committees, and (6) preparing the map for publication. Given these steps, the production of this map serves as a type example for successful collaboration across the planetary sciences to advance the exploration of the Solar System.
