Overview
The Arizona Space Grant Consortium (AZSGC) makes an effort to highlight our programs' alignment with current NASA Mission Directorates (MDs). All AZSGC-funded projects are required to align with one or more NASA MDs. Please review the information below to find out more about the NASA MDs before choosing which MD(s) and research priority area(s) your project most closely aligns with. For examples of research questions and projects within each MD, visit the websites listed below.
Human Space Flight Mission Directorate (HSFMD)
Announced in late May 2026, the new Human Space Flight Mission Directorate is a combination of the former Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate (ESDMD) and the Space Operations Mission Directorate (SOMD). With human spaceflight operational to both low Earth orbit and the Moon, the Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate and Space Operations Mission Directorate will unify as HSMD.

Mission Support Directorate (MSD)
The Mission Support Directorate (MSD) enables NASA mission success. We provide the tools, people, and capabilities to ensure NASA leadership in aerospace, science, and exploration. From the legal and procurement teams who secure vital contracts and acquisitions to the infrastructure management teams who oversee NASA facilities, roadways, and utilities. From the IT teams who provide dependable platforms and innovative tools to the human resources teams who ensure access to top talent. The work of the mission support community is foundational to mission success.
Science Mission Directorate (SMD)
The Science Mission Directorate is an organization where discoveries in one scientific discipline have a direct route to other areas of study. This flow is something extremely valuable and is rare in the scientific world. From exoplanet research to better understanding Earth’s climate to understanding the influence of the sun on our planet and the solar system, the directorate’s work is interdisciplinary and collaborative.
Research and Technology Mission Directorate (RTMD)
Announced in late May 2026, the new Research and Technology Mission Directorate (RTMD) is a combination of the former Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate (ARMD) and Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD). As a combined research, space technology, and aeronautics organization charged with nuclear power and propulsion development, RTMD will ensure NASA has the capabilities needed for the mission of today and the future.
