  Mark your calendars!  The 2013-2014 academic year Arizona/NASA Space Grant Undergraduate Research Internship Statewide Symposium's kick-off banquet will be held at the Tucson Hilton East on Friday, April 11, 2014, and the scientific symposium will be held at the Kuiper Space Sciences Building at the University of Arizona on Saturday, April 12, 2014.

• Abstracts Accepted!

  Abstracts are being accepted through the Abstracts and Events Attendance Form. Submit yours before the deadline on March 2.  ASCEND! team abstracts are due April 2 after the March 29 spring launch.

Friday, April 11: Banquet Speaker Edward Beshore to speak on "Arizona Knows Asteroids!"

Asteroids were at one time called the vermin of the sky. Today we think they could hold secrets to the beginning of the solar system, the source of water and organics on Earth, and even act as filling stations for future space travelers. All along the way, the University of Arizona's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory has been a pioneer in the discovery and study of these important members of the solar family.  Hear about asteroids, what they tell us about our own origins, and why they are suddenly so interesting.

In 2002, Edward Beshore joined the Catalina Sky Survey, a leading NASA-sponsored program to inventory asteroids and comets that may represent a hazard to the Earth. In April of 2009, he became the Principal Investigator for the Catalina program. In 2012, Beshore was appointed the Deputy Principal Investigator of the OSIRIS-REx mission, a University of Arizona-led mission to visit a Near-Earth asteroid and return a sample to the Earth.

His interests include physical characterization of asteroids, scientific software development, robotic telescopes, survey techniques and technologies, large data set management, and high performance data processing systems. Before coming to the U of A, Beshore was a senior officer of a technical marketing company in Colorado Springs, and an R&D Project Manager for Hewlett-Packard. He has also worked as an engineer at the MMT Observatory, the Boeing Company, and on the Pioneer 11 mission to Saturn. Beshore still maintains his own observatory in Colorado. His other interests include travel and geology.
